Hockey Player of the Week - Aaron Nelson
article by Barb Fisher, photos supplied
Aaron Nelson, a grade 6 student at Sir James Dunn is a feisty centreman wearing #14 shirt with the Peewee Travellers. He is small in stature, but mighty in effort. He plays with heart and does not shy away from facing the opposition, matching stride by stride players often a foot taller and much heavier than himself. Well Aaron, when I followed hockey in my youth I recall that a player does not have to be big to be a "great one"! Aaron's favourite NHL team is Montreal, but according to one unnamed informant, he is already a cut above the Habs in performance. Replying to the question of his favourite thing about hockey, joining his teammates playing his favourite game, and packing the stands with family and friends who cheer him on is the best. Aaron is a great kid on and off the ice.
This past weekend two Tournament of Champion (TOC's) were played with our Novice in Cochrane and our Peewees in Manitoulin Island. The Novice team suffered a heart breaker losing in overtime the semi finals against West Ferris 4-3. The Peewees also came so close, but also lost in the semi-finals overtime 6-5.
Next weekend March 9-11 the Atoms and Bantams also travel out-of-town to play their TOC's at the "B" level. The Atoms play in Iroquois Falls and the Bantams in South Porcupine. If it again comes down to overtime play, hopefully they can buck the trend and it is our team that gets the winning goal.
