Congratulations to our Atoms and Bantams; both Gold Medal Champions at this past weekend's NOHA Tournament of Champions. Our Atom Travellers headed to Iroquois Falls to compete at the "B" Division. The NOHA divides teams based on their population and although Wawa is classified as a "C" centre, both teams felt that they had what it takes to move up a level and compete against northern Ontario teams with a larger population from which to draw players.
Our Atoms began the tournament with a 3-3 tie vs Manitoulin Panthers, and with a dominating 5-0 win against South Porcupine and another 6-1 win vs Chapleau, the Atoms finished up in first place in the Round Robin. In Sunday morning semi-final action, our Atoms faced Powassan and came out victorious with a 3-1 win. Finals at the TOC's mean long waits as each team is required a minimum of a three hour break between games, but our Atoms held it together and showed their fans the "right stuff". In a hard fought nailbiter against South Porcupine, our young Wawa team came out victorious with a 4-2 win - GOLD. Congratulations also goes to two of our Wawa Atom players who demonstrated stellar performances: Rylan Fellinger was awarded the Most Valuable Defenceman medal of the tournament, and Parker Moore received his medal for the Most Valuable Forward in the tournament. Bravo Wawa Atom Travellers!
Meanwhile, in another neighbouring town our Bantam Travellers were setting the pace for their finale. Also competing at a "B" division, these young men were focused from game one on dominating each of their three Round Robin games: 7-1 win over Cochrane, 8-3 victory over Chapleau and an absolute domination over Timmins with a 23-1 win. On to the semis on Sunday morning meeting Manitoulin Panthers, our Bantams fought their toughest battle of the weekend but prevailed with a 8-4 win. Again the long wait meant difficulty in focusing on the end game. The Bantams fearlessly skated onto the ice meeting Chapleau for the medal and they did not disappoint; domination again with a 6-0 win coloured GOLD. Congratulations to these young men for representing our little town of Wawa with talent and respect both on and off the ice!
Hockey season this year is quickly wrapping up - but not just yet. Next weekend our Novice and Peewee teams travel to South Porcupine and Hearst respectively for their NEOHA League Finals. Have fun and Go for Gold!
